Spanish and EU regulations:
The importance of fishing activity and fish consumption has prompted strict regulation on subjects such health controls, hygiene, certification of species before they reach consumers, prevention against specific diseases, sales, water quality, and fish & shellfish farming.
Legislative framework of European quality standards related to fishing is driven by the Common Organization of Markets (COM) for sea fishery and fish farming products.
At national level, standards for classifying species were diligently implemented attending to the guidelines drawn up by the Spanish UNE, where regulators clearly established the compulsory health and marketing rules for the sector.
Extensive regulation has been specifically developed on matters like disease prevention, verification of adequate diet, quality controls prior to reach final consumers, veterinary alert systems, communications to consumers, and many other subjects related to hygiene during the handling and processing of fish & seafood products. There are also regulations in place for the capture and sale of fishery products at European Union level.
